It's official! Caribana is here!

It's officially Caribana season! The Launch kicked off Scotiabank Caribana events yesterday at Yonge Dundas Square instead of Nathan Phillips Square (City Hall) due to the city strike. While the smaller space was quite congested, I think it drew in a larger crowd.
Fantasia International, Connections, Tribal Knights, Toronto Revellers, Callaloo, Jessie Matthews, Nip Davis and Borokeete were the bands represented. I did find myself getting into the mas mood when the costumes were paraded on the stage.
Entertainment included Macomere Fifi, the cast from The Harder they Come, and Structure.

If you want to play mas, but think it's too late, most mas bands have several sections still available, they are not sold out, so you've still got time to select a costume.
There are no plans, say the officials, to cancel or relocate King and Queen from the city-run Lamport Stadium on July 30.

There are some new events this year: Clash of Tents, Tent Theatres, After Parade Fusion and Tent Villages goes to Ontario Place.
11 Calypsonians will perform at The Great Hall (Queen St. West) for Clash of Tents on July 29.
While watching the Parade of Bands on August 1, Soca and Calypso artists will also entertain along the Lakeshore and in the CNE grounds for the Tent Theatres.
After Parade Fusion will be a concert celebrating carnival music, and will take place at Lamport Stadium after the parade at 8 p.m. on August 1.
A Disney-styled parade of Mas Bands will be brought to Ontario Place on August 3 for Tent Villages goes to Ontario Place.

Same story ... two spins

Strike may affect location of three major Caribana events

Scotiabank Caribana organizers are waiting to find out if three major festival events have to be moved due to conflicts related to Toronto's civic workers strike.

The large Saturday parade along Lake Shore Boulevard will proceed, and the city has assured Caribana organizers that there will be garbage pick-up and EMS on hand, much like it did for the Pride Festival in June.

That's not the case for the King and Queen competition and Pan Alive events scheduled for July 30 and 31 at Lamport Stadium, located near King and Dufferin Streets.

The stadium is owned by the city, which may prove to be a sticking point in the ongoing dispute between the city and the union.

Caribana spokesperson Stephen Weir says that festival organizers are capable of executing the event without city staff help, but adds they don't want to get between the city and the union.

He says both events will go ahead even if they have to move locations.

The festival's annual Island Weekend concert on the Toronto Islands may also be in trouble, as ferries are out of service since the strike began. The concert is scheduled for Olympic Island on Aug, 2. but may end up moving to Ontario Place, says Weir.

Tuesday's official Caribana launch party was supposed to be a Nathan Phillips Square, but has been moved to Yonge-Dundas Square instead.

Now we get to the same story as reported by ctvtoronto.ca

And it begs the question of cancellation Vs new venues.

Or maybe it raises the issue of editorial slant, and its affect on public perception

Strike threatens to cancel Caribana festivities

Organizers of Toronto's Caribana festival say they are nervous the city's civic strike will ruin this year's celebrations as several events are now facing cancellation.

The strike has frozen city services for the past three weeks including garbage pickup. The Caribana festival weekend draws about a million people to the city but organizers say they don't have the money to hire private contractors.

Joe Halstead, the chair of the festival management committee, told CTV Toronto that organizers will do what they can to manage the garbage situation.

"The parade will go on," he said. "What we will do is arrange with the city to hopefully help us with some management staff and we will get a host of volunteers from our community to help us with garbage pickup after the festival."

The city's management was called in to help pick up trash after Toronto's popular Pride parade in June. The streets were clean by the next morning.

However, garbage isn't the issue that is posing the biggest threat to the festivities.

The much-anticipated Caribana launch party -- which has been held at Nathan Phillips Square for the past 42 years -- had to be moved so that picketers would not interfere with the party.

The launch party will now be held at Yonge-Dundas Square at the cost of $10,000.

Caribana's king and queen competition and the Pan Alive competition could be cancelled, as they are both held at Lamport Stadium -- a city-owned facility that is being regularly picketed by striking city workers.

"If we don't find an alternative venue that works for us logistically and financially then it won't happen," said Falstead.

The Olympic Island party is also in jeopardy as the strike has halted all ferry services to the Toronto Islands.

Falstead say Ontario Place is the first choice for an alternative venue.

Toronto's business community stands to lose millions of dollars in revenue if the events are cancelled. Caribana, which always takes place on the first weekend of August, typically draws in visitors from all over the U.S. and Canada.

OK folks, tomorrow Tuesday July 14th is the official launch of Caribana 2009!!!

Its happening at Yonge and Dundas Square between 12 noon and 2pm.

I have to work, but Karabana will be there lending a hand and getting some pictures for those of you who can't come down.
If you can make it, I would really recommend it, its a very nice time, and there will be costumed masqueraders representing the bands, plus you can meet band leaders, listen to some live calypso, steelpan, eat some island food and take in the vibes.

So, if you see Karabana hail her out, and tell her to bring me a piece of sweetbread or something.
Enoy yourselves.

Whats up with Hamiltons Carnival???(Mardis Gras)

(Last year after the parade in Hamilton)

I have heard a really alarming and disturbing rumor that Carnival will not happen in Hamilton this year. PLEASE Somebody say its not true.

I'm usually here trying to let people know whats going on with Caribana, but this is an open plea for info, if anyone knows whats the story please leave a comment or send us an e-mail.

As you all might know, we Love carnival in Hamilton and we have been attending every year since it started and I actually look forward to it as much as I do Caribana itself. In some aspects, I have more fun in Hamilton. If true, this will be a huge dissapointment.
So please, if you can displel this rumor or share the story as to why Hamilton isn't happening, please let us all know

Fabulous footwear

One of my favourite things to do after I've chosen my costume is shop for footwear. Back in the day we just had a rather dull selection of mostly white athletic shoes to chose from, but we're quite fortunate nowadays to have many shoe options, including buying colourful shoes online. Caribana masqueraders have not just stuck with sneakers the last several years either, but boots, a Trinidad Carnival influence, are seen more and more.
Locally, I've seen many inexpensive multi-coloured fun ked style sneaks at Walmart & Zellers that would match very well with so many Caribana costumes. As well, Costa Blanca outlet store on Orfus Rd. has these fringed boots for just $10. This neutral tan colour or black would go well with a lot of costumes.
Here's some shoes and boots that coordinate with the costumes you're playing in. Let everyone know where you've shopped for footwear & what store you had success with.
