How to get your free Canadian credit reports

This post isn’t carnival related unless you need a carnival loan. But it’s some info that I hope you can use.
Now, when I say free, I mean absolutely free…. Not even a stamp. With this method, you don’t need to photocopy your ID, fill out any forms or mail anything in.You don't even have to talk to anyone, it's fully automated.

The credit reporting agencies want you to pay for this info, and they bury the free options pretty deep in their websites. Its capitalism, and nothing is wrong with that.
You can’t find out your score for free, but you can get a copy of everything on your credit report. This will let you check for errors or signs of fraud. (there is no penalty to your rating for requesting a copy of your own report)
The two big agencies in Canada are Equifax and TransUnion. Both offer this free telephone service, but they don’t go out of their way to publicize it.

What you need before you call

To get a free credit report, all you need is your social insurance number and a major credit card (to verify your identity).
During the process, they will ask you if you want to pay to see your credit score, if you say no thanks to this option, there is absolutely no charge, and you will receive your credit report in the mail in about a week.

The numbers to call

Equifax 1-800-465-7166
TransUnion 1-800-663-9980 (outside Quebec) or 1-877-713-3393 inside Quebec
It’s best to check both of them. I found TransUnion to be a little more in depth.
Tune in next time for links to Free tax software including e-file.
